About

What namebby is and where the data comes from.

What is namebby?

namebby is a privacy-friendly tool for discovering baby names. It helps parents explore thousands of names across languages — filtering by gender, origin, popularity, spelling, and pronunciation — all directly in the browser.

The app is designed for parents who want names that work naturally across multiple languages, particularly English, German, and Spanish.

Features

Browse — search and filter the full database with advanced filters for gender, origin, length, popularity, and sorting.

Swipe — quickly sort through names with a swipe interface. Save, skip, or exclude names with gestures or keyboard shortcuts.

Shortlist — build and organize your favorite names. Reorder by dragging, add notes, and export as CSV.

Partner matching — connect with a partner to maintain separate shortlists and see which names you both love.

Name data sources

The names in namebby come from public, open-source datasets published by government statistical agencies. These are preprocessed at build time into optimized indexes for fast in-browser search and filtering.

Sources include:

  • US Social Security Administration (SSA) — CC0, 1880 to present
  • UK Office for National Statistics (ONS)
  • Spain Instituto Nacional de Estadistica (INE)

Additional name metadata is supplemented from open first-name databases to improve coverage across countries and languages.

Privacy

namebby is built with a frontend-first architecture. Search, filtering, and ranking all happen in your browser — no queries are sent to a server. Your preferences and shortlist are stored locally on your device.

The only server interaction happens when you connect with a partner to sync shortlists. Even then, only the names you explicitly save are shared.
